Amazon shares fall for a second straight session on Thursday, “human error” allows Alexa user to access recordings from another customer

A “human error” has made it possible for a German resident using Amazon.com Incs (AMZN) Alexa voice assistant to access over a thousand audio recordings from another customer.

Amazon shares closed lower for a second consecutive trading session on NASDAQ on Thursday. The stock went down 2.29% ($34.25) to $1,460.83, after touching an intraday low at $1,433.52, or a price level not seen since November 20th ($1,420.00).

Shares of Amazon.com Inc have surged 24.91% so far in 2018 compared with a 7.71% drop for the benchmark index, S&P 500 (SPX).

In 2017, Amazon’s stock rose 55.96%, thus, it again outperformed the S&P 500, which registered a 19.42% return.

According to Reuters, citing a report by German trade publication c’t, the user had requested to listen back to Alexa-made recordings of his own activities, but instead, he gained access to 1 700 audio files from an unknown person when he received a link from Amazon.

The report also stated that the files were subsequently deleted from the provided link, but they had already been downloaded to the users PC.

“We resolved the issue with the two customers involved and took measures to further optimize our processes. As a precautionary measure we contacted the relevant authorities,” a spokesperson for Amazon was quoted as saying by the same media.

The spokesperson also referred to the occurrence as an “isolated single case”.

According to CNN Money, the 45 analysts, offering 12-month forecasts regarding Amazon.com Inc’s stock price, have a median target of $2,125.00, with a high estimate of $2,450.00 and a low estimate of $1,900.00. The median estimate represents a 45.47% upside compared to the closing price of $1,460.83 on December 20th.

The same media also reported that 41 out of 47 surveyed investment analysts had rated Amazon.com Inc’s stock as “Buy”, while 1 – as “Hold”.
